Understanding STL and 3MF files
Which file to send, and how to export it correctly.
The formats we accept
- STL: the most common format. Stores only the shape as triangles — no units, colours or settings.
- 3MF: a newer format that stores units, multiple parts and colours. Preferred when your software supports it.
- OBJ: also accepted; colours and textures are not used for single-colour printing.
Exporting from your design app
- 1Finish your model and combine or group the parts you want printed together.
- 2Set the export units to millimetres.
- 3Choose STL (binary) or 3MF.
- 4Use a fine resolution so curves are smooth, but avoid extreme settings that make huge files.
- 5Re-open the exported file in a viewer (or our 3D workspace) to confirm it looks right.
Downloaded models
If you downloaded a model from a sharing website, check its licence allows you to have it printed — especially for selling. We may decline models that infringe trademarks or copyrights.
