Preparing transparent artwork

Why a transparent background matters and how to export one correctly.

Why transparency matters

DTF prints exactly what is in your file. A white or coloured background box in the image will be printed as a solid rectangle on the shirt. If you only want the design, the area around it must be transparent.

Exporting a transparent file

  1. 1Delete or hide any background layer in your design app.
  2. 2Make sure the checkerboard pattern (transparency) shows behind the design.
  3. 3Export as PNG — JPEG cannot store transparency.
  4. 4Use the sRGB colour profile so colours display consistently.
  5. 5Open the exported file again and zoom in on the edges to confirm nothing is left behind.

Watch out for semi-transparent pixels

Soft shadows, glows, feathered edges and low-opacity areas are tricky in DTF. The white base layer may print under them, creating a pale halo or a grainy look. Where possible, use solid edges, or convert soft effects into a halftone pattern.

Resolution

  • Aim for 300 DPI at the actual print size. A 28 cm (about 11 in) wide print needs roughly 3,300 pixels across.
  • 150 DPI can still look acceptable for some designs; below that, edges often look soft or pixelated.
  • Enlarging a small image does not add detail. Start from the original or a vector file (SVG, PDF, AI) when you can.
  • Our free artwork checker on the DTF page will estimate your DPI at the chosen width.
